An NWT (Non-Watertight) door is commonly used in ships for access to areas that are not required to be watertight, such as cargo holds, engine rooms, and crew quarters. These doors are designed to be less expensive and less complex than watertight doors, as they do not need to meet the same stringent requirements for sealing against water ingress during emergency situations like flooding or sinking of the ship. NWT doors are typically made of lighter materials like aluminum or steel plate instead of heavy watertight doors made of steel bulkheads with rubber gaskets that seal around the edges of the door frame during closure for watertight integrity purposes only found on watertight doors.
